What’s an Advanced Dance?
An Advanced Dance is like our regular dance, but with minimal walkthroughs and more challenging dances. If you know the difference between a Petronella Twirl and a California Twirl, then this night is for you.
An Advanced Dance often includes:
- Some easier dances that are done with no walk-throughs. It assumes that dancers can do all moves (hey, contra corners, roll away, diagonal chain, pass through to an ocean wave, etc) without instruction.
- A couple of medleys (two or three no-walkthroughs danced as one continuous dance). The dance changes on the fly, so dancers need to respond quickly to the new calls.
- Some challenging dances that will require some concentration but will be taught with a walk-through because they have novel combinations of moves or rarely done moves.
- A few dances with more complex figures and interactions with those outside your minor group of four.
- Formats that are danced less frequently (i.e., four facing four).
If you think you would enjoy this challenging and stimulating collection of dances, join us for a night to stretch your synapses, savor your swings, and feast your feet on a side of contra most people only see at dance weekends. As with all our dances, anyone can come and listen to this hot band!
Caller
CAROL KOPP is northeast Ohio’s premiere dance caller and teacher.

Music
Lissa Schneckenburger, folk singer and champion fiddler, grew up in Maine as an active member of the contra dance community, where she cut her teeth as a musician at the age of seven. She has continued to explore music throughout her life, leading to her graduation from Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music.
Her twenty years of experience has polished her skill into ease and perfect command of her art. Lissa has already produced six highly acclaimed recordings, three of which are solo. She has played around the world from Russia to Europe to Canada and in almost all 50 states.
Lissa will be joined by Dave Cory, an accomplished musician on the tenor banjo, bodhran, guitar, upright bass, and keyboard. He has been performing for the past 10 years, playing mainly traditional Irish and American folk tunes. He has studied at the Willie Clancy summer school in Ireland, toured the U.S. with the renowned Irish group Providence, and toured in Thailand and Japan with Seattle based group An Tua.
