Flash Dance: Waltz of the Flowers

Sunday, August 10, 2008, 5:30 – 8:30 pm

Ever hear of "flash mobs"? They're spontaneous gatherings that bring people together on short notice for a brief period of time. Well, here's your chance to join dancers and musicians for a "flash dance" an opportunity to waltz or contra in a public place . For more on "Flash Dances" see: http://www.childgrove.org/flashdances/flashdance_howto.htm

Place: Missouri Botanical Garden

The Missouri Botanical Garden is closed to the public that night; so it is our chance to "dance like nobody is looking". Waltz. Walk. Waltz some more. Waltz in the fountain, waltz on the path, waltz for the roses. And they will waltz for us.

Sometimes, we do contra dances, too. On this night, there were over forty people dancing on a little walkway in one of the most beautiful rose gardens anywhere, just as Greg promised us. Hatchlings Karen (shown here), David, and Billy called the dances, with some assistance at the end of the line from Martha where sound from the battey-operated microphone didn't quite reach.

George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver watches over the dancing at the Carver Pool near the new Children's Garden.

Here's a fox that came to visit us in 2008. Maybe he mistook one of our redheads for his mommy.

Progressive Dance
Ever hear of a progressive dinner? Well, this is a progressive dance. We dance a few dances at each venue, then move on to the next.

How to find us:

2008 Map of the Missouri Botanical Garden (pdf, 1.84M). Be sure to check it against our version for the places we'll be.

Driving directions to Missouri Botanical Garden (pdf)

Here is a Google map if the pdf takes too long to load.

NEW ENTRANCE

The Garden asked us to use the side entrance. As you drive onto the MBG property, make a left when you're right in front of the main building, then a quick right onto the smaller parking lot. See green square and circle.

THE PLAN
Our plan is to start at the long reflecting pool (A), then proceed through the Rose Garden to the lily pond pool with the Chihuly glass bobbing in the water (B). From there we go to a spot beyond the Climatron, (C), then behind the Home Gardening Center to the Carver Garden (D). We'll end up, as we did last year, in the fountain (E).

What makes this place special?

How often do you get a chance to dance in one of the most beautiful gardens in the world? The Missouri Botanical Garden is a world-class facility. Even better, how often do you and fifty of your friends get to have the place to yourself?
