Flash Dance #7: Dance of the Segways

Gypsy Meltdown on Segways

Friday, August 18, 2006
Ever hear of "flash mobs"? They're spontaneous gatherings that bring people together on short notice for a brief period of time. Well, here's your chance to join dancers and musicians for a "flash dance" an opportunity to waltz or contra in a public place. For more on "Flash Dances" see: http://www.childgrove.org/flashdances/flashdance_howto.htm

Place: St. Louis Science Center Exploradome

(The tent-like building adjoining the main Science Center building.)

Schedule

3:15 p.m. Check-In for Segway Class (pre-registration needed)
3:30-5:00   Segway 101 Class
5:00-6:00   BJC Sportsworks (or dinner)
6:00-6:45   Omnimax (Adrenaline Rush)
7:00-8:00  Contra Dance - caller: Mac McKeever; band: Mound City Slickers
8:00-9:30   BJC Sportsworks

Things to Do

1) A Segway 101 Class - Just For Us
3:15 - 5:30pm

Here's your chance to ride a Segway, a personal transportation device. Five gyroscopes keep you balanced and you move forward just by leaning.  The class includes a introductory video, instruction, then plenty of time to practice. At the end, you'll have your very own Segway 101 Drivers' License so you can take advanced courses or go on tours.

It'll probably take a couple of classes before we can get eight people to do a Segway Square Dance. But it should be possible. If you've ever seen Square Dancing Tractors, you'll understand.

What's a Segway? See: www.segway.com/segway/

  • Time: 3:15 Arrive & Check-In; 3:30 - 5:00 Class
  • Place: Exploradome
  • Cost: $15
  • RSVP: The Segway Class will sell out, so the slots will go to the first 8 who sign up.
  • Contact Greg Rohde at grjmj@swbell.net or 618.444.4975 to sign up

2) Omnimax Adrenaline Rush
6:00 - 6:45pm
3) BJC SportsWorks
5:00 - 6:00pm
and
8:00 - 9:30pm

BJC SportsWorks is a fun, interactive exhibit which encourages health and wellness through a focus on a variety of sports.

As a way to say "THANKS" for dancing, the Science Center is giving each dancer FREE Admission to BJC SportsWorks. (Admission is normally $10, so you "earn" an easy $10 by dancing. Not a bad deal.)

You can

  • scale a climbing wall,
  • experience G forces as you safely ride a bike on a loop that takes you totally upside down
  • run a 10 meter race with another dancer, a virtual Jackie Joyner Kersey, or a virtual T-Rex
  • dance to the music and see if your feet can match the beat
  • test your balance
  • see if you can land like a cat
  • pitch like a major leaguer
  • challenge another dancer to a wheelchair or rowing race
  • and many other exhibits

For details, see: http://slsc.org/content.aspx?id=1691

4) Contra Dance
7:00 - 8:00pm

Oh yeah, by the way, we'll have a contra dance from 7:00 - 8:00.
We'll dance in the Exploradome lobby, the tent-like building next to the main building.

Since dancing is a way to stay fit, the Science Center contacted us and asked us to dance as part of the BJC SportsWorks exhibit.  We'll invite others to join us too.

Mac McKeever will call and the Mound City Slickers will play.
